Clickety Clack - Day One

5 years of idle fingers. 5 years of life taking over. 5 years of husband and doggy and then baby who is now on his way to growing himself those wings that take  20 odd years and I finally work up the courage to put words to paper (screen).

What planets aligned in such perfect order I wonder? Nevertheless, this is my resolution for this year. 4 months too late but today, my friend, is Vishu. Having multiple ethnic roots is great that way;I get to choose my new year too and start working on my resolution whenever..and I choose today . Ha!

Great way to jinx those resoltuions? Announce them to the whole world. So here goes.. a 100 days of writing challenge. From me to myself.

The fan continued regurgitating hot, sweaty, humid air. Shaoli had just stubbed out what seemed like her hundredth cigarette of the day. She reached out for one more and the empty pack mocked her. Maybe now she'd change out of those smelly three day old clothes and step out? Not to be defeated so easily, she reached under her bed with a grunt and pulled out a reserve; one of many she had stashed around the house for precisely these "emergencies".

A typical blue weekend, Shaoli didn't really look forward to these. These were the unwanted weekends, the ones without plans, the ones where everyone she knew had other plans, the ones where she really really wished she made the effort to be more friendly to random people and not pick and choose company. Ah well, she liked her snooty self most other days and this wasn't a garb she was about to shed in any hurry.

She stared at the fan and the fan continued it's wholly shoddy attempt at cooling the room. Just as she was about to doze off, she was startled by complete silence. Damn! another power cut. A day long one at that. She had forgotten about these day long torture sessions they had started the previous summer. Every third Friday the power gods decided, bang in the middle of summer, on Fridays was the best time to remind people of how harsh heat could be; weekend plans be damned. Fortunately, she was at work Fridays and rarely got back home until late Saturday morning, too drunk and happy to care about electricity or the lack of it.

"Well, we couldn't have escaped for ever" she commented to no one in particular as she hauled herself off the bed - a change of place might make the heat more bearable. Fifteen minutes and no luck later, Shaoli had finally had enough of being cooped up on a hot and dreary day, running out of cigarettes and fluids (alcoholic or otherwise) to take too much of her own charming company anymore. "Looks like the outdoors is in order" she again announced to the empty house as she prepared to bathe and seriously considered stepping out on her ownsome.

"Ooh yess, I would love to see the outdoors. This room does get boring"

Shaoli looked back in terror. Her mirror had just offered her company.
